Led by the Spirit

It has been a while since I have posted. I have been busy, but I realized that some of my “busyness” was not really true business. Some of my time was spent being frustrated, worried, discouraged, and probably a few other things that are wrong. We all face these and other emotions. They are a result of our sinful natures and also, at times, attacks from the devil in different ways. The more you want to live for God and to follow His will, the more you will face these attacks. The Bible calls it spiritual warfare. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

The only way to successfully combat the wrong in your life is to depend on the Holy Spirit.  There are some things that you need to do to help the Holy Spirit to work in and through you.

  • I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   – Confession of sin is important and the first step necessary.
  • Romans 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.  –   Dedicating your life to God is important.  Notice that the result of dedication is being a different person.
  • I Peter 5:6-7   Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.   –  It takes humility to be willing to hand over to God your concerns and worries.  This step is very important to allowing the Holy Spirit to be able to work in your life.  Hanging onto worries keeps you from being able to trust God.
  • Ephesians 3:13b-14  but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.   – You need to be willing to put behind you past problems that don’t seem solved, guilt and things that you can’t fix so you can allow the Holy Spirit to lead you on.   You can’t allow those things to control you.  When you do put them behind, the Holy Spirit will be able to help you and will often solve those problems.  You just have to trust that He knows what is best.

You will have to do these more than once.  Even if you have dedicated yourself to the Lord, you will probably need to rededicate things again.  It could be that you didn’t realize that a certain aspect of your life needed to be dedicated or you see that sin has caused you to try to control yourself or you told God that you would give Him everything except one thing that you want to control and now you see that you were wrong.   Depending on the Lord to guide you does mean that you need to depend on Him completely, but you will need to take care of sin yourself and you will need to tell the Lord that you want Him to be in control.  He will help you to make changes and to grow spiritually.  He will bring peace and confidence in God.  You will have to make the first step.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7
