In the margin of my Bible in Luke 12 I have the words “reason not to worry” written seven times. I am not sure where I got the idea to mark my Bible in this way. I thought that I would share these seven reasons for not worrying. Below each verse I will share my thoughts on the verse.
1. Reason not to worry: verse 23
For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
Life is more important than food, and life is in God’s hands.
2. Reason not to worry: verse 24
Consider the ravens,
for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn,
and yet God feeds them;
how much more valuable you are than the birds!
God provides for birds.
He will provide for you because you’re more important than birds.
3. Reason not to worry: verses 25-26
And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life’s span? If then you cannot do even a very little thing,
why do you worry about other matters?
If worrying can’t help you do a small thing, like adding an inch to your height, why worry about anything?
4. Reason not to worry: verses 27-28
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass in the field,
which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace,
how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!
If God made the flowers so beautiful, some of which only last one day, won’t He take care of you in a better way,
since you are more important to Him?
5. Reason not to worry: verses 29-30
And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink,
and do not keep worrying.
For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek;
but your Father knows that you need these things.
The Lord knows that you need food and drink, so you don’t have to spend your life searching for them. He will provide.
6. Reason not to worry: verses 31-32
But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
Do not be afraid, little flock,
for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.
Put God first in your life, and He will care for you.
7. Reason not to worry: verse 33
Sell your possessions and give to charity;
make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys.
Give as freely as God gives to you. In other words, He will provide abundantly.
Conclusion of not worrying: verse 34
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
A heart for God.
But God, being rich in mercy,
because of His great love with which He loved us,
even when we were dead in our transgressions,
made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him
in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
so that in the ages to come He might show
the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
