A definition of attribute is a property intrinsic to its subject and one by which it is distinguished or identified. Another way of saying this is what a person is, so God’s attributes are the what He is. The attributes that I will discuss today are ones that only God can have. They give us a picture of the greatness of God. No one other than God can have these qualities. I will write about four today, and next four next week.
The first attribute is God’s simplicity, which is His quality of being uncompounded, incomplex and indivisible. It might be easier to understand this by comparing this quality to humans. We humans are complex. Our emotions fluctuate from day to day. We can be one thing to one person and something completely different to another. We change our opinions and loyalties very quickly. God is not like that. What He is with one person He is with the other. He does not change. What He said years ago is exactly what He would say today. We can approach Him with confidence, because He does not change who He is like the Wizard of Oz who was something different to each person who came to him.
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace,
so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
He is infinite, so He has no limits or ends. He is not limited like we are, so He can oversee everything. He will never end so we can depend on Him completely to continue to help and guide us.
“But will God indeed dwell on the earth?
Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You,
how much less this house which I have built!”
1 Kings 8:27
King Solomon said these words at the dedication of the temple that he built for God. Although it was built for God, it could not contain Him. He is greater than that.
God is eternal. There was never a time when He was not, and there will never be a time when He will cease to be. Because He has always been, we can be assured that He knows what has happened before and will know how to help us into the future. We can take comfort in the fact that He will always be with us.
Before the mountains were born
Or You gave birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
God will never change, nor can He be changed, that is His immutability. Nothing we do will change Him or His plan for us.
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
“For I, the Lord, do not change”
As we meditate on God’s simplicity, His being infinite, His eternality and immutability, we begin to see the greatness of God. What is amazing is that great as God is He wants us to have a relationship with Him. His simplicity and immutability help us to see that He is accessible.
