Doing Our Job

 Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God
in the appointed order of his division,
 according to the custom of the priestly office,
he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

Luke 1:8-9

While Zecharias was performing his job as he was supposed to do, God spoke to him.

When Moses was doing his job as a shepherd, God spoke to him in the burning bush.
(Exodus 3)

When Samuel came to anoint David king, David was out watching the sheep as he usually did. (1 Samuel 16)

Peter, James and John were busy doing their fishermen duties, when Jesus called them to be His disciples.   (Matthew 4:18-22)

We often think that we can arrange our circumstances in order to learn God’s plan for us.  We expect that He will reveal His will for us in grand ways.  God is mainly looking for us to be faithful in the things we already know to do.  When we are busy doing the task at hand, He will be more likely to help us to see the next thing to do.  By faithfully reading God’s Word and doing what we see there to do and by fulfilling our daily responsibilities to family and work, we put ourselves in a position to be used by God.

We studied Romans in school and these verses in Chapter 12 helped us to see that our function in the service of God is to do our part faithfully.

Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,
each of us is to exercise them accordingly:
if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;
if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality;
he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12:6-8

Other verses that remind us that we each have a job to perform and we should do it faithfully.  As we trust God and serve Him, He can bless us and guide on to the next thing to do.

 As each one has received a special gift,
employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God;
whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies;
so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 4:10-11

Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him;

Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
Cease from anger and forsake wrath;
Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
For evildoers will be cut off,
But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
Psalm 37:3-9
