Z for Zipporah

The topic of this post is not Zipporah, the wife of Moses.  You can read about her in Exodus 2 and 4.  The topic of this post is children.  The title comes from a silly thing we have done in our family.  We have given boy nicknames to the girls and girl nicknames to the boys.  Our children with lovely names like Angelia, Anna, Caroline, Isaiah, Joseph, Katrina, Mary, Micayla, Peter, and Suzanne (written in alphabetical order) also have in the family records such names as Bobby, Buddy, George, Fred, Josephina, Mike, Petunia, Sam, Tommytoes, and Zipporah (also written in alphabetical order which does not correspond to the order of the first list).

Children are a blessing.  God said so.  I am learning more and more what a blessing children can be.  With children from 24 to 7 years of age, I have found blessings can be found at every age, even the difficult stages.  It does take the Lord to help you to see those blessings.

Behold, children are a gift of the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.
Psalm 127:3-5

I was also surprised that it takes work to love them.  I thought that a mother would automatically be filled with love when the child was born.  A few sleepless nights, other stresses, schedule changes and selfish thoughts can make affections become small. I have been thankful that I have been able to depend on God to help me to love and keep loving the children He gave me.  I am thankful for those who helped me in learning these lessons.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior,
not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine,
teaching what is good,
so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands,
to love their children

Titus 2:3-4

An excellent wife, who can find?
For her worth is far above jewels.
Her children rise up and bless her

Proverbs 31:10 and 28a

I think a woman is blessed to have children.
