Jesus Christ – His name tells us who He is and what He does.
Jesus means Jehovah is salvation
[Mary] will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus,
for He will save His people from their sins.
Christ means the Anointed One, Messiah
One of the two who heard John speak and followed [Jesus],
was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
He found first his own brother Simon and said to him,
“We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ)
Knowing the meaning of His name gives us the information that we need to give us hope of salvation. His name declares that He is the source of salvation from sin. Our salvation depends on our belief, our faith, that He is the only way for sins to be dealt with. We can have faith because Jesus has another name that should give us greater confidence. That name is Immanuel.
Immanuel means God with us.
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son,
and they shall call His name Immanuel,
which translated means, “God with us.”
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us,
and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father,
full of grace and truth
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, although He existed in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant,
and being made in the likeness of men.
The blessing of the name Immanuel is that as God He can truly save from sin. If He was just a man, He could not save from sin, because He would be just a man. Since He is God, He has power and holiness. He can truly save from sin.
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel,
that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,
whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead . . .
And there is salvation in no one else;
for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men
by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:10a and 12
Of Him all the prophets bear witness
that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.
If you have never believed in Jesus as your Saviour from sin, please do.
If you have believed in Jesus as your Saviour, rejoice that His names are those constant reminders of what He has done for you.
